AMVETS’ programs fall into four main categories: Veterans Services, Legislative Affairs, Membership, and Programs & Events.
The Veterans Services program provides assistance to veterans with filing for VA benefits, finding housing and employment, and obtaining health care. The Legislative Affairs program advocates on behalf of veterans and their families at the local, state, and federal level. To calculate the program expenses ratio, we divide a charity’s program expenses by its total expenses. For example, if a charity has $100 in total expenses and $80 of those expenses go towards its programs, then its program expenses ratio would be 80%. 4
Ideally, a charity should have a program expenses ratio of at least 75%. That means at least 75% of its total spending is going towards its programs and services, as opposed to fundraising or overhead. According to our latest calculations, AMVETS has a program expenses ratio of 81%. 5 This suggests that AMVETS is doing a good job in terms of using its resources to fund its programs and services.
The second financial ratio we look at is fundraising efficiency. Fundraising efficiency measures the amount of money a charity raises in relation to the amount of money it spends on fundraising. A high fundraising efficiency ratio means that the charity is raising more money than it is spending on fundraising, and a low fundraising efficiency ratio means that the charity is spending more money on fundraising than it is raising.
To calculate fundraising efficiency, we divide a charities total revenue by its total fundraiser expenses. For example, if a charity has $100 in total revenue and $10 in total fundraiser expense, then its fundraising efficiency would be 10%. 6 Again, ideally we want to see a number above 10% because this would suggest that for every dollar spent on fundraising, the Charity generates more than one dollar in revenue. According to our latest calculations AMVETS has a fundraising efficiency ratio of 14%. 7 This suggests that AMVETS raises $14 for every $1 it spends on professional fundraiser expense which is considered very good!
